A Pasadena-based healthcare technology company announced Thursday the addition of facial recognition software to its core programs to improve the accuracy of identifying patients and linking them with their medical records.

The software can even recognize photos from digital cameras, driver’s licenses and existing databases, the company claims.

NextGate, a leader in biometric technology, built their platform on a neural network that is designed to perceive the compositional characteristics of a person and convert them into a numerical score which is integrated into the company’s Enterprise Master Patient Index, a measure that provides a precise link between patients and their records, according to a statement released to the press.

“Biometrics extend the reach of patient identification, giving organizations more flexibility, accuracy, and confidence when locating, aggregating, and sharing patient records,” said Dan Cidon, NextGate’s Chief Technology Officer, in the statement. “The low cost yet sophisticated technology can be deployed in various environments, from self-service kiosks to the Emergency Room, enabling rapid identification of patients and access to their clinical information across the enterprise.”

NextGate’s platform aims to decrease fraud, improve patient safety and increase the speed and accuracy of matching duplicate records, according to the release.
