Pasadena Council to Vote on $1.7 Million California Blvd. Project, $4.5 Million Police Tech Upgrade

Key items include paramedic education, breathing apparatus for firefighters

The Pasadena City Council is set to consider a $1.732 million contract for safety enhancements along California Boulevard and a $4.506 million agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. to upgrade police technology during its May 6 meeting at City Hall.

The Council’s agenda also includes a proposed $115,000 contract with Shower of Hope for mobile shower and laundry services for the homeless, and an increase to $9,028,478 in the Oracle America Inc. contract for Water and Power Department software support.

Public hearings are scheduled to address the Fiscal Year 2025 City Manager’s Recommended Operating Budget and adjustments to sewer use fees for fiscal years 2025-2029. The Council will also consider adopting the Fiscal Years 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program Budget, which outlines major projects for enhancing City facilities and services.

The Human Resources Department has proposed establishing three new job classifications and adjusting salaries for four existing ones. The Fire Department is seeking approval for a $90,000 paramedic education program with the Regents of the University of California, a $286,131 contract for new breathing air compressor and carbon monoxide monitor systems, and a $1.8 million expenditure for new self-contained breathing apparatus equipment.

Other items include a $1,200,000 contract with Best Contracting Services Inc. for as-needed roof repair services and a $3,055,000 contract with Robertson’s Ready Mix Ltd. for concrete materials.

The Public Safety Committee has recommended purchasing three helicopter searchlight and gimbal systems for $383,685 to enhance the Foothill Air Support Team’s capabilities.

The Council is also expected to direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance amending the Municipal Code regarding the annual transfer from the Power Fund to the General Fund.

Additional agenda items include the presentation of the Fiscal Year June 30, 2023, Single Audit Report and the Safe, Clean Water Program Audit Report by the Finance Department, and a continued public hearing on adjustments to the refuse collection fees for fiscal years 2025-2029.

The meeting, which begins with a closed session at 4:30 p.m. and a public portion at 5:30 p.m., will allow for public comments.
