The Pasadena Education Network (PEN) has opened applications for the second Rodney Goodwin Memorial Scholarship this month. The scholarship, with an equivalent cash award of $1,000, will be awarded to one male Pasadena Unified School District senior who will enroll in a 4-year college in the fall 2016, is the first in his family to go to college, and demonstrates both need and academic success in high school.

The scholarship is in honor of Rodney E. Goodwin who passed away on March 12, 2014. A resident of Altadena since 1987, Goodwin was loved by all who knew him because of his generous nature and loving spirit.  Professionally, Goodwin was the Chief Financial Officer for the Operating Engineers Trust Funds/IUOE Local 12 in Pasadena.

Goodwin grew up in the rural South, and, because of the guidance he received while growing up, was the first in his family to go to college.  He was a proud graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina where he received a degree in Accounting.

Believing in the value of education and knowing first-hand the importance of college access for low income students, Goodwin became a mentor at Pasadena Unified School District’s John Muir High School.

To keep Rodney’s passion and memory alive, his partner Carlos D. Carrillo conceived this memorial scholarship.

This year, PEN will award the scholarship to one male PUSD Senior who is the first in his family to go to college, has a minimum 3.0 GPA, is eligible for free or reduced lunch, and is committed to enroll as a full time student in a 4-year college or university during the upcoming academic year.
