Pasadena Family Suffers Devastating Loss as Home Burns on Christmas Eve

[Updated Sunday, December 25, 2016 | 9:25 a.m.]    A home in West Pasadena suffered “significant” damage in a 8:51 p.m. blaze on Christmas Eve that has apparently left the three residents homeless.

Firefighters arriving at the house, located in the 400 block of Redwood Drive near La Loma Road, reported seeing flames shooting through the roof.

Pasadena Fire Chief Bertral Washington was the scene of the incident and took the photograph which accompanies this story of the column of flames leaping skyward.

Two adults and a dog were safely evacuated, but firefighters were still searching for the family cat as of late last night. A third resident was also displaced by the fire.

The South Pasadena Fire Department, Alhambra Fire Department and Battalion 9 from the Verdugo City’s Fire department assisted Pasadena in knocking down the fire. Knockdown came one hour after the first units arrived on scene.

No injuries were reported.

The home was reportedly a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom 1,306 square foot home built in 1926. Early Sunday morning, officials estimated the structure suffered $700,000 in damage and the value of lost possessions was $150,000.

As of yet, the cause of this fire has not been determined. An investigation is underway.

This house fire occurred about a block away from fatal November 25 fire which took the life of an elderly woman and injured a man attempting to rescue her. The cause of that fire has not been pinpointed but investigators said that home was filled with a number of hazardous conditions any one of which was a likely culprit.

Pasadena firefighters were called earlier in the day yesterday to a less damaging blaze after a fire erupted on a stove in a home in the 900 block of Medford Avenue.
