The Pasadena Fire Department has embarked on a week of activities and events to mark Fire Prevention Week, including encouraging the community to join in through a chalk art contest.
The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Danger,” Pasadena fire Inspector Bethany Moss said.
A key message fire officials hope to send is to remind residents to regularly test and check the batteries in their smoke alarms, and recognize the high-pitched chirps the devices make to warn that their batteries are running low, she said.
In addition to educational outreach with schoolchildren, each Pasadena Fire Station is equipped with baskets of chalk and fire safety education materials available for pickup, organizers said. And each has been adorned with large chalk art murals of their own, although many were washed away in Monday night’s rain.
Community residents are invited to pick up some chalk and create chalk art of their own, related to the theme of fire prevention and safety, Moss said.
Photos of the artwork can then be sent as messages to the Pasadena Fire Department’s Facebook page at facebook.com/PasadenaFD, along with the subject line “Chalk It Up,” through Friday.
Winners will be selected to receive yet-undisclosed prizes, Moss said.
A troupe of Girl Scouts from San Marino paid a visit to Fire Station 32 on Tuesday afternoon to learn about fire safety and work toward their first aid merit badges.
Moss and other female fire officials also took the opportunity to talk with the troupe about Fire Department careers.
The Pasadena Fire Department has previously marked Fire Prevention Week by hosting informational booths in the community, but Moss said the department wanted to try something a bit “more engaging” this year.
