Pasadena Firefighters to Get Air-Light Breathing Device After City Council Consent Calendar Approval

Published on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 | 5:15 am

As part of Monday’s consent calendar, the City Council authorized the City Manager to enter into a $585,163 purchase order contract with South Coast Fire Equipment, Inc. for the purchase of one Firematic Ford F550 Air-Light Unit.

Firefighters wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) devices on fire and hazardous materials incidents to provide breathable air in environments with oxygen deficiency, smoke, gasses, and other airborne contaminants that may be otherwise dangerous to breathe.

Standard tanks are only capable of carrying approximately 30 minutes of air for personnel. The air supply may be further reduced during strenuous work. All fire department engine and ladder companies carry spare bottles. However, in multiple alarm fires or hazardous material incidents, the air in SCBA tanks and spare bottles are used up quickly. A supplemental supply of breathing air is often needed on these large incidents.

Here are the other items that passed on Monday’s consent calendar.

  • Individual contracts, with David Volz Design Landscape Architects, Inc.; David Evans and Associates, Inc.; RJM Design Group, Inc.; and Moore Iacofano Goltsman, Inc. for On-Call Landscape Architectural Services for a total amount not-to-exceed $500,000 for each consultant over a four-year term.
  • Landscape architectural services consultants to provide professional services on an as-needed basis for the City of Pasadena’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) over the next four years. The scope of work includes, but is not limited to, performing preliminary studies; developing and reviewing design options; managing the project schedule; defining the detailed project, scopes of work; performing site visits; preparing project documents such as project specifications, plans, bid schedule, and cost estimates; providing 2-D and 3-D renderings; and performing quality assurance checks and quality control of all project documents for accuracy, adherence to applicable codes and completeness. The selected consultants will provide services when City staff is not readily available, or when services exceed the expertise and/or qualifications of City staff. Landscape architectural services will be mostly utilized for projects within the Parks and Landscaping – Parks Projects, and the Arroyo Projects sections of the Capital Improvements Program.
  • A $736,824 contract award to Spragues’ Ready Mix for purchase of Portland Cement Concrete. In April 2015, Municipal Services Committee supported a Citywide Sidewalk Improvement Program to address approximately 1.1 million square feet of damaged sidewalk at over 18,000 locations citywide based on an inventory survey completed in 2015. The Department of Public Works Street Maintenance uses Portland Cement Concrete for sidewalk improvements in the Northwest area of Pasadena. Work in this area has primarily been funded through City of Pasadena Department of Housing funding from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).
