Pasadena Heritage Celebrates the Women Who Shaped the City’s Landscape

Published on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 | 6:16 am

This Women’s History Month, Pasadena Heritage is paying tribute to the female visionaries who designed some of the city’s most iconic gardens and landscapes.

From March 22 to 24, the nonprofit organization will host “Preservation Pasadena Part I – Breaking Ground: The Legacy of Women in Landscape Architecture,” a series of events that showcase the work and influence of trailblazing women in the field.

“Join us during Women’s History Month as we explore the exceptional work and lasting legacy of pioneer women landscape architects including Katherine Bashford, Beatrix Farrand, Ruth Shellhorn, Florence Yoch, and Lucile Council,” Pasadena Heritage announced on Facebook on Saturday.

The events include a wine tasting featuring female winemakers at the historic Blinn House, a lecture and garden tour at La Casita del Arroyo that highlights the career of Florence Yoch, who created the gardens for films Gone with the Wind and The Sound of Music, and a presentation by the California Garden & Landscape History Society at the Blinn House, which can be attended in person or online.

The series is part of a larger initiative by Pasadena Heritage to preserve and promote the city’s rich cultural and architectural heritage, which includes many examples of women’s contributions to the art and science of landscape architecture.

A unique feature of Preservation Pasadena Part I is a Drive-Yourself Landscape Tour with interior stops. This tour offers participants an exclusive exploration of the showcased landscapes. It also includes a members-only stop for Pasadena Heritage members.

Full details and tickets for the events series can be purchased via the official Eventbrite page, www.eventbrite.com/e/breaking-ground-the-legacy-of-women-landscape-architects-tickets-840868790187?aff=ebdssbdestsearch.

Pasadena Heritage said the series is sponsored in part by KornRandolph, the Lead Sponsor, and Susan Masterman Architects-Interiors-Gardens.
