Embracing the rich tapestry of Asian American and Pacific Islander cultures, Pasadena is getting ready to commemorate Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a diverse array of virtual programs, events, and activities.

Coordinated by the Pasadena Public Library and the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services (PRCS) Department, these initiatives aim to honor the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in shaping the history, culture, and economic progress of the United States.

From May 1st through June 1st, residents of all ages will have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of cultural experiences, from storytelling sessions to music performances and educational workshops.

Among the highlights of the month-long celebration are events that offer a deep dive into various aspects of Asian culture. On May 11, the Allendale Branch Library, at 1130 S. Marengo Ave., will entertain audiences with “Tales of Asia and the Pacific Islands,” featuring storyteller Barbara G. Wong as she spins magical tales about mythical Asian dragons and other exciting stories.

Similarly, on May 16, the La Pintoresca Branch Library, located at 1355 N. Raymond Ave., will host an enchanting performance of traditional Chinese music by award-winning virtuoso Celia Liu, offering attendees a glimpse into the rich musical heritage of China.

The celebration extends beyond cultural exploration to encompass community engagement and social awareness. On May 18, the Hill Avenue Branch Library at 55 S. Hill Ave. will host an event in collaboration with the Asian Foster Family Initiative (AFFI). The event will shed light on the challenges faced by Asian foster children and provide insights into how individuals can support these vulnerable communities.

In addition to cultural and educational programs, Pasadena’s celebration of AAPI Heritage Month includes hands-on crafting experiences, such as the “Cherry Blossom Craft” at the San Rafael Branch Library, at 1240 Nithsdale Road, on May 6 and “Sashiko Mending” at the Santa Catalina Branch Library at 999 E. Washington Blvd. on June 1. These activities offer participants the opportunity to engage with traditional crafts while learning about their cultural significance.

Pasadena will also highlight Asian American and Pacific Islander-owned businesses through a social media campaign led by the City’s Communications and Marketing office. By featuring videos on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, the campaign aims to promote social awareness and support for AAPI entrepreneurs in the local community.

The city is encouraging residents to participate in these virtual events during the month-long celebration, and to embrace the opportunity to learn, engage, and celebrate the rich heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
