Members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity’s Pasadena Alumni Chapter and the organization’s national leadership teamed up this month to provide gloves, sanitizer, mask extensions. and other personal protective equipment to staff and residents of a local assisted living facility this month.

The inspiration came after one of the fraternity’s members learned he would require assisted care at The Terraces at Park Marino in Pasadena, the Pasadena branch said in a written statement.

So the organization applied for a grant from the national Senior Kappas Affairs Committee, which provided $500 for the community service effort, said Eros Rice, who serves as Senior Kappa Affairs Committee chairman for the fraternity’s Pasadena branch.

Pasadena Kappa Alpha Psi members added to the donations, allowing the group to obtain much-needed PPE for the senior living community, he added.

Among the items collected were nitrile gloves, personal-size bottles of hand sanitizer. and mask extenders that allow masks to be worn for longer periods without irritating the wearers’ ears, Rice said.

“The Terraces were very excited to have us and they expressed their hope that this wouldn’t be the last time,” Rice said. “So when we have our general meeting in the month of October, we plan on bringing that to the table on how we can potentially have some sort of annual event where we donate something.”

Kappa Alpha Psi Pasadena Alumni President Christopher Nolan said community service is a big part of the fraternity’s activities.

“We’re a social fraternity, if you will, but our aim is to help the community that we serve,” he said.

The fraternity, as a whole, was founded in 1911. The Pasadena branch was founded in 1961, Rice said.
