Editor’s Note: In this report, Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip Sanchez reviews noteworthy incidents which occurred or were concluded in recent weeks in Pasadena.

On February 19, at 4:30 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to a loud music call near Claremont Street and Fair Oaks Avenue.  After arriving, the officers conducted a check on foot attempting to locate the source of the music.  The officers were in the King’s Villages parking lot when, for unknown reasons, a subject ran from them. The person was eventually caught and officers recovered a loaded firearm. The suspect was arrested without incident and transported to the Pasadena jail.  The officers later determined that the suspect was on felony probation and has prior arrests for gun possession.

On February 19, at 9:46 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to a call of suspicious circumstances in the 1100 block of Lincoln Avenue.  The witness told police she saw someone run through her side yard.  When the officers checked the area, they located a loaded firearm.  No one was arrested in this incident.

On February 20, at 8:20 p.m., Pasadena Police officers conducted an enforcement stop near Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Boulevard after seeing a traffic violation.  During their field investigation, officers determined the suspect was in possession of a loaded firearm. Two suspects were arrested without incident and transported to the Pasadena jail (one for the gun; one for an outstanding warrant).

On February 22, at 8:04 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 1600 block of East Colorado Boulevard regard an armed robbery that just occurred. On arrival, officers observed a subject matching the description of one of the suspects.  The suspect ran from the officers; however, with the assistance of the police helicopter, he was later arrested near Sierra Bonita Avenue.  The suspect was positively identified by the victims.  The 2nd robbery suspect was located near the Allen Avenue Metro platform and was arrested without incident. A total of nine victims were robbed at gunpoint by the suspects. Despite a comprehensive search, officers were not able to locate the firearm used in this string of robberies.

On February 22, at 10:20 p.m., Pasadena Police officers conducted an enforcement stop on a subject riding a bicycle after seeing a traffic violation. During their field investigation, officers determined the suspect was in possession of a loaded firearm and edged weapon. The suspect (ex-con) was arrested without incident and transported to the Pasadena jail.

On February 23, at 7:52 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to a call of males drinking in public in the 700 block of Winona Avenue.  During their field investigation, the officers contacted a group and determined one of the subjects was in possession of a loaded firearm. The suspect was arrested without incident and transported to the Pasadena jail.

On February 27, at 2:00 p.m. approximately 600 people gathered at City Hall to support a candidate running for President of the United States.  Supporters marched from City Hall to Colorado Blvd, subsequently ending at Memorial Park.  The group was well organized, orderly and communicated frequently with the Pasadena Police Department about their intentions.  There were no arrests, citations, or other actions taken by PPD officers during the march.  However, as the march was concluding, officers received a call of a man with a rifle in Memorial Park.  Officers quickly arrived in the park and located the subject who was carrying a .233 Assault Rifle Upper (part of the weapon system).  The person was detained without incident and the officers learned the subject was taking the device to a nearby pawn shop.  The device looked like a fully functional Assault Rifle, which clearly caused concern.  Like many of the critical incidents in this week’s newsletter, the officers involved in this occurrence used great restraint, tactics and judgment to avoid a lethal encounter.
