Pasadena Police Chief Recaps Last Week’s Critical Incidents

Editor’s Note: In this report, Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip Sanchez reviews noteworthy incidents which occurred or were concluded in recent weeks in Pasadena.


On August 2, at about 4:05 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to a burglary in progress in the 700 block of North Allen Avenue. The victim encountered the suspect trying to break into his residence. The suspect left the location and the victim called 9-1-1. Offices arrived quickly and located the suspect who was arrested without incident. The suspect was subsequently booked at the Pasadena Jail for residential burglary. The involved officers included: Sergeant K. Gomez, Officers Sainz, Calcanas, E. Butler, Glockson, Woolford, and Luevano.

On August 3, at about 6:32 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 100 block of Glen Avenue regarding a shots fired investigation. On arrival, officers learned that the suspect(s) fired several rounds and fled the area. Officers were not able to locate the intended victim and fortunately no one was hit by the gunfire. On August 3, at about 12:00 a.m., the Pasadena Police Department’s Air Operations Section assisted the South Pasadena Police Department with a vehicle pursuit. The lone suspect, who was wanted for “Criminal Threats,” traversed numerous jurisdictions which included South Pasadena, Pasadena, Los Angeles, and Glendale. The suspect eventually abandoned his vehicle on the campus of the Glendale Community College and attempted to flee on foot. The crew quickly directed responding units to surround the campus in order to prevent the suspect’s escape. During a subsequent search utilizing the thermal imaging camera system onboard the helicopter, the crew located the suspect hiding in nearby bushes and directed officers to his location. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The incident further underscores the importance of regionalized law enforcement services and air support.

On August 5, at about 10:00 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 600 block of West Colorado Boulevard regarding a suicidal person who was missing from his residence. On arrival, officers talked with several witnesses and learned the subject had stated his intent to commit suicide. PPD officers checked several locations where the subject was known to frequent, however, the subject was not located. Hours later, officers responded to the area under the Colorado Street Bridge and located a deceased male. The officers confirmed the man’s identity as that of the missing person. There were no signs of foul play and the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office responded assist with the investigation.

On August 5, at about 1:30 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the area of Hudson Avenue and Washington Boulevard regarding a street robbery investigation. On arrival, officers leaned that the victim was involved in an argument with the suspect in a convenience store parking lot, resulting in a physical fight. During the fight, the suspect forcibly removed a gold chain from the victim. Through the investigation, the suspects were identified and later arrested without incident by Pasadena Police Officer Poirier. They were booked for robbery at the Pasadena Jail. Great work!
