Pasadena Police Chief Recaps Recent Critical Incidents

Editor’s Note: In this report, Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip Sanchez reviews noteworthy incidents which occurred or were concluded in recent weeks in Pasadena.

On August 19, at about 5:30 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 100 block of Painter Street (Community Arms) regarding shots fired. On arrival, officers learned that a suspect fired several shots from a vehicle as it passed by. As the suspect driver was leaving the area, he collided with a parked car. The case was assigned to Pasadena Police Detective Jordin Ling, who conducted a comprehensive investigation. The suspect was identified and officers from SES (Special Enforcement Section) and SIU (Special Investigation Unit) arrested the suspect (Steven Pike) without incident. On August 31, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed 1 count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon (245 PC) and the court imposed a “no bail” order. Our investigation is ongoing.

On August 21, at 9:17 p.m., Pasadena Police officers investigated a shots fired call in the 600 block of Earlham Street. Police communications personnel received several calls regarding the shots and dispatched field officers. PPD officers recovered evidence suggesting the suspect(s) fired several gunshots; fortunately, no one was injured by gunfire. Our investigation is ongoing.

On August 21 at 1:37 a.m., Pasadena Police officers investigated a stabbing in the area of Del Mar Boulevard and Raymond Avenue. The stabbing occurred during a physical altercation with a group of males. On arrival, officers located the victim, who provided a description of the suspect. He was found several blocks away and arrested without incident. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.

On August 23 at 12:14 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 700 block of East Colorado Boulevard regarding a robbery at a commercial business. On arrival, officers learned that the suspect took several items and left the store without paying. When the suspect was confronted by the store security agents, the suspect brandished a knife and threatened the security agents. PPD officers located the suspect a short time later and arrested him without incident. The stolen items and the knifed used in the robbery were recovered.

On August 29, at 7:30 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue regarding trespassing on private property. On arrival, officers made contact with two subjects who were on the property without authorization. Further investigation revealed that they were in possession of several pieces of U.S. mail. They were arrested for mail theft. The United States Postal Inspectors were notified.

On August 29, at about 9:53 p.m., Pasadena Police Officers Bulaon and Goetz were on routine patrol and conducted an enforcement stop in the area of Bonnie Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. During the field investigation, the officers discovered that the driver had an outstanding arrest warrant and his passenger was on probation. The driver was arrested without incident and officers located burglary tools inside the car along with a quantity of controlled substances.

On August 30, Pasadena Police detectives assigned to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU)conducted a quality of life enforcement operation in the area of 147 East Orange Grove Boulevard. After watching anti-social and illegal activity for a period of time, twelve (12) suspects were arrest and issued citations. The cases will be presented to the Office of the City Prosecutor for filing considerations and stay away orders.

On August 30, Pasadena Police detectives assigned to the Youth and Family Services (Y&FS) Unit conducted a sexual registrant compliance check. Detectives visited approximately thirty (30) sex registrants. Twenty-nine (29) were in full compliance with their court order. The remaining suspect was in custody at the Los Angeles County jail. Y&FS detectives routinely conduct visits within our community to ensure compliance.

On August 31, at 7:30 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the area of California Boulevard and Raymond Avenue regarding a traffic collision involving a motorists and a Metro Gold Line train. During the field investigation, officers learned that the motorist was driving east on California Boulevard and failed to stop for the crossing arms. The driver collided with the train, causing minor damage. There were no injuries as a result of the collision.

On September 3, at about 11:06 p.m. Pasadena Police officers investigated an Assault with a Deadly Weapon incident in the 800 block of Brooks Avenue. During the investigation PPD officers learned victims and suspects all know one another. The victims were seated inside a vehicle when without provocation, they were confronted by the ex-girlfriend’s sister and her cousins. A verbal dispute arose, which lead to a physical confrontation. The suspects (three Black Females, 22, 25, 29 years old, Pasadena and Upland Res) began hitting the victims about the head and body with a mini baseball bat. The suspects also damaged the victim’s car. The suspects then fled the area and despite a comprehensive search they were not located. Our investigation is ongoing.
