Pasadena Congresswoman and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Judy Chu met with President Barack Obama Wednesday to discuss immigration reform, increasing diversity among presidential appointments and improving language access in enrollment for the Affordable Care Act.

“The beauty of the American Dream is that no one has a claim to it, but everyone has a stake in it. CAPAC’s meeting with President Obama focused on promoting and securing this promise for all Americans,” Chu said in a statement. “President Obama recognizes that good ideas can come from anywhere – and anyone. CAPAC and the President agree that passing comprehensive immigration reform is as vital to our economy as it is to our national security.”

The meeting, which was attended by 21 other CAPAC members, also addressed the pressing issues impacting Native Hawaiians and Pacific Island Territories, including federal recognition for Native Hawaiian self governance and equitable funding and treatment for the territories.

“Safeguarding opportunity also involves fostering talent, and ensuring government leadership reflects the diversity of our country,” Chu said. “That is why CAPAC Members urged President Obama to address the disproportionate under-representation of Asian Americans in the federal government.”

Chu noted that the meeting was productive as the President showed receptiveness and willingness to address CAPAC’s concerns.

“President Obama has demonstrated throughout his presidency that he understands the needs of the Asian Pacific American community, and that fact was reinforced today,” she said. “We look forward to working with the President to ensure American opportunity is safeguarded for generations still to come.”

CAPAC is comprised of Members of Congress of Asian and Pacific Islander descent and Members who have a strong dedication to promoting the well-being of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. CAPAC has been addressing the needs of the AAPI community in all areas of American life since it was founded in 1994.
