Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts Opens Application for 37th Instrumental Competition

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts has set the stage for the 37th Annual Instrumental Competition and is inviting gifted musicians specializing in brass, woodwind, or string instruments to apply. 

To be eligible, musicians must be full-time students aged 14 to 19 residing and studying in Los Angeles County.

The competition takes place at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music on Sunday, March 3, 2024, when finalists vye for top honors before a panel of judges that include members of the renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.  

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts will give individual prizes, ranging from $500 to $4,000, to support the ongoing education of these young musicians.

Since 1985, the Instrumental Competition has granted over $685,000 in awards, and many past winners and finalists have carved distinguished careers in classical music; some have secured positions with prestigious orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.

Applications are open until 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024. 

The prize fund for the annual competition is generated through the organization’s annual benefit, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, one of the country’s oldest, largest, and most successful house and garden tours. For 2024, the organization has chosen the Potter Daniels Manor, a stately English Tudor Revival Style home built in 1902 and remodeled in 1922. The name is in honor of the original owner, Gertude Potter Daniels.
