The ambitious expansion, funded by the Helen and Will Webster Foundation, will launch a new summer program, extend services to more schools, and provide musical instruments on loan to students.
Starting with the 2023/24 academic year, the All City Orchestra will add McKinley School as its third site. The All City Orchestra is a no-cost ensemble for underserved PUSD students in grades 3-5, currently serving students at Jackson Elementary and Field Elementary Schools. The program at McKinley School will also see an increase in staffing, with an additional conductor and four instrument coaches for weekly rehearsals.
As part of the initiative, the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra will invest over $30,000 to establish a music instrument library, providing PUSD students with musical instruments on loan. This significant investment aims to make music education accessible to students who may not have the means to acquire an instrument.
The funding will also facilitate the purchase of a stage timpani for rehearsals and performances at Pasadena High School.
Additionally, PYSO will introduce a two-week summer intensive program in 2024, offering daily instruction for beginner and intermediate students in grades 5-8.
This program aims to provide year-round access to music education, underscoring PYSO’s commitment to the comprehensive musical development of the region’s youth.
The Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra is among the leading youth orchestra programs in the country and has been training future leaders since 1972. It serves students from 29 cities, 17 school districts, and 84 schools throughout Los Angeles County and the San Gabriel Valley, offering both weekly afterschool ensemble rehearsals and supplemental in-class instruction within the Pasadena Unified School District.
