Published on Thursday, April 4, 2024 | 6:38 am

The Pasadena Unified School District has announced the return of its annual Black Living History Museum event, scheduled for May 14, 2024, at the Robinson Recreation Center. The event, sponsored by the Pasadena Unified School District African American Parent Council, invites all Pasadena Unified School District 3rd-5th graders to research, create, and portray an inspiring Black individual, whether contemporary or historical.

The Black Living History Museum offers students a unique opportunity to engage deeply with African-American history while developing their research, public speaking, and creative skills.

Participants are encouraged to register before April 15 for a chance to work with students in the John Muir Design Lab to create their costumes, highlighting the event’s hands-on approach to learning and presentation.

“The Black History Living Museum will be held in-person at the Robinson Recreation Center,” the African American Parent Council stated in an announcement. “The Museum is open to the public at 6:30 p.m., but students are asked to arrive at 5:00 p.m. for a light dinner and time to rehearse.”

The Black Living History Museum debuted in May 2019 and has since become one of the African American Parent Council’s most beloved initiatives. A recent edition was adapted to an online format due to the pandemic, showcasing the organizers’ adaptability and commitment to continuing this educational project under challenging circumstances.

The African American Parent Council, chartered by the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education, is dedicated to honoring and embracing the identity and experiences of Pasadena Unified School District’s African-American families. The council advocates for the cultural acceptance of all and mobilizes stakeholders to transform the educational system to ensure a high-quality education for every student.

In addition to the Black Living History Museum, the African American Parent Council sponsors and organizes several other initiatives throughout the year, including the Math Power Hour, aimed at improving math skills among 1st and 2nd graders, and various cultural events that celebrate and honor the rich heritage and contributions of African Americans.

The African American Parent Council’s initiatives and events are part of its broader mission to create an educational environment that is inclusive, supportive, and conducive to the success of all students, with a particular focus on uplifting the African American community within the Pasadena Unified School District.
