The Pasadena Unified School District redistricting commission will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday to select a new consultant.

The PUSD is required to undergo a redistricting process every 10 years based on census data. The process seeks to ensure the proper balance of populations between all districts.

According to the latest census data, white residents still make up a plurality of the city’s population at 36.7%. Latino residents make up 33% of the city’s population, followed by Asian Americans at 16.9% and African-American residents at 8.5%.

The Pasadena Unified School District is comprised of students from Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre.

According to one district document, the school district’s task force is made up of three residents appointed by the Pasadena City Council. The school board also appointed three residents, who are not currently on the board. Other task force members include two residents of nearby Altadena and one Sierra Madre resident appointed by the Sierra Madre City Council.

The task force must conduct public meetings in January to receive comments on the redistricting plan. The school board will receive the final report in January and additional meetings will be held in  January and February to consider the recommended plan and final report of the Redistricting Task Force.

The review of the PUSD board trustee areas must be completed with any changes voted on by the board by the end of February.
