Police statistics released last week show a climb in reported local crimes of 12% so far this year over last, with a 74% spike in vehicle burglaries and disturbing 29% increase in rapes.

The murder rate has dropped, however, back to the 2012 level.

“Current analysis shows that crime decreased 15% compared to April, yet it is still up year-to-date compared to this time last year,” Police Chief Phillip Sanchez said.

Overall, the crime rate in Pasadena has steadily grown higher each of the last three years.

Burglaries of cars and trucks has skyrocketed. Chief Sanchez offered the public advice on how to reduce their risk of loss:

“Community members can continue to support our crime fighting efforts by locking doors, setting alarms, keeping valuables out of sight, and reporting suspicious activity. It is important to take precautions no matter how little time a location or vehicles is left unattended,” he said.

Statistics showed the greatest likelihood of vehicle burglary occurring exists in Council Districts 3 and 4.
