Pasadena’s Human Relations Commission Meets Tuesday

Pasadena’s Human Relations Commission will discuss updates Tuesday regarding the City’s Multimedia High School Essay Contest, which has provided scholarship money to the annual winners in the past few years. 

In December members of the Commission were informed the contest continues to be suspended due to COVID-19. Earlier this year, proposals were submitted to revive it as restrictions related to the pandemic begin to relax, although nothing final is being discussed at the moment. 

Last month, the Commission discussed accepting submissions virtually with a deadline of Friday, April 16, and having the ad hoc committee evaluate the contest submissions to present at the Commission meeting in May. The prize money would come from the Recreation and Parks Foundation account, according to the discussion. 

Another information item on the agenda for Tuesday is the proposed recognition of 2020 Human Relations Commission Annual Award winners. During last month’s meeting, it was proposed that the recognition be held during one of the Pasadena City Council’s virtual weekly meetings. 

At that meeting, the Commission decided to select the award winners for 2021, and to honor three years of award winners, from 2020 to 2022, by 2022. An update on this proposal is expected on Tuesday. 

The Commission will also discuss holding a special meeting this year on issues that affect human relations in the City.
