Pasadena’s Labor Day Weekend Forecast: Triple Header of Triple Digits

Published on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 | 6:35 am

The expected Labor Day weekend heat wave set to bake Pasadena got a National Weather Service tuneup early today, and the news is that forecasters now expect the City of Roses will wilt under 107° skies on Sunday.

The protracted heat wave began pushing up temperatures Tuesday, marking the onset of an expected weeklong period of oppressive conditions.

The lineup will see Saturday get things warmed at 101°, Sunday will zoom up to 107° and Monday, Labor Day, will cool down to a toasty 103°.

It’s prompted calls for residents to take precautions against heat stroke and to conserve power whenever possible.

The extreme heat and low humidity could create elevated fire weather conditions as well, National Weather Service forecasters said.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the NWS urged. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”

Forecasters also urged residents to be aware of the signs of heat stroke and to take precautions.

“Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside,” according to the NWS. “When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.”

Due to the sustained high heat, the City of Pasadena said it will activate a cooling center at Robinson Park Recreation Center, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave. this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The City official urged people to bring snacks. Water will be available.

Officials also reminded Pasadenans that public libraries are a great place to seek heat relief. Here is a list of all branches: https://www.cityofpasadena.net/library/branches/

Making matters worse, San Gabriel Valley residents were being warned Tuesday about the likelihood of poor air quality over the next week that could reach unhealthy levels in some areas. The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued an ozone advisory, warning of potentially unhealthy air quality most afternoons, exacerbated by the rising temperatures, through at least Sunday.
