PCC Appoints 2 New Directors

Pasadena City College has appointed Valerie Wardlaw as Interim Director of Public Relations, while former PR director Juan Gutierrez was promoted to Director of Government and Community Relations.

Wardlaw was a special projects consultant for the PCC Foundation and served in the Women’s Health Division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She also worked in the fields of marketing, public relations and communications.

“I’m very passionate about PCC and the students here. My main focus will be on how get the message out about the many wonderful programs at this college by totally utilizing social media and community outreach,” Wardlaw told the PCC Courier.

Wardlaw graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Hampton University in Virginia and later gained her masters and doctorate degrees in psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary.

“I used to intern here at PCC as a student at Fuller and it’s great to be back,” Wardlaw told the newspaper. “I’m looking to beef-up our team at the public relations office.”

Gutierrez, who was PCC’s Director of Public Relations since 2004, will administer the college’s governmental and community relations from city to federal levels.

“I am excited to build this effort from the ground up and work with our many wonderful community groups and dedicated legislators to create partnerships that will help students and our community,” Gutierrez told the Courier.

Gutierrez graduated from the California State University in Bakersfield with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and gained his masters degree in the same course from the University of Redlands.

“I’m extremely grateful and proud of this hardworking, award winning public relations staff,” Gutierrez told the newspaper. “The advancements we made couldn’t have been made without this invaluable staff.”
