The Pasadena City College badminton team stayed perfect at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the South Coast Conference, but overcame some letdowns in a 15-6 win over East Los Angeles. The contest was played at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The Lancers SCC winning streak is at 16 in a row since head coach Jennifer Ho took over the program in 2015.

The most surprising outcome occurred after PCC had clinched the team points advantage as the Lancers’ defending CCCAA champion doubles team of Rebecca Tzou and Sandra Maw lost to ELAC’s No. 1 duo of Jean Buenaslor and Selene Liu, 21-15, 21-15. Buenaslor-Liu also notched a win over Eugenia Mendez and Daniela Raygoza, 21-7, 21-8. That accounted for four of the Huskies’ team points.

PCC’s singles mostly dominated with two sweeps each by No. 1 Tzou, No. 3 Raygoza, No. 4 Maw, playing lower in the ladder, No. 5 Jennifer Delgado (pictured), and No. 6 Hong Yan Liu. Mendez played higher at No. 2 and lost to Buenaslor, 13-21, 22-20, 21-15, and to S. Liu, 21-7, 21-9. In No.3 doubles, Ana Espinoza and Diana Resendiz scored a 21-5, 21-4 win over Vanessa Liang-Chris Li.

“We moved things around to see how certain players would do,” Ho said. “I think we didn’t focus later in the match in doubles. Otherwise, we did a good job. The players need to understand that it’s not going to be easy in the team postseason or at state individuals. We have to concentrate and be more consistent.”

On Wednesday, March 23, the Lancers host El Camino in their first SCC match v. the Warriors this season at 2 p.m.
