PCC Presidents Latino Advisory Committee Scholarship Breakfast Set for April 23

The Pasadena City College President’s Latino Advisory Committee (PLAC) will be holding its scholarship breakfast on Tuesday, April 23, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in PCC’s Creveling Lounge. Jaime Escalante II, son of the late PCC distinguished alumnus Jaime Escalante, will be the guest of honor.

The keynote speaker will be Elsa Bolado, an elementary school teacher and former student of Jaime Escalante. Bolado will be discussing her experience as one of his students and the story that was portrayed in the biopic Stand and Deliver. Bolado has said Escalante was not simply an extraordinary calculus teacher, but he also taught students they could achieve anything in life.

PLAC has been awarding scholarships to students since 2005. In the past six years, more than $30,000 in scholarships have been awarded. The honorees excel academically, are student leaders and volunteer in the community. The continuing goal of PLAC is to enhance the educational success of Latino students.

Donations go directly to students. There are five sponsorship levels, from $50 to $1,000, but all donations are welcome. Your name will be recognized in the PLAC awards program if the donation or pledge is for at least $50 and received by Monday, April 15. The cost of attending the breakfast is $35.

This year, the Pasadena Mexican American History Association and the PCC Association of Latino Employees will be presenting scholarships as well.
