Edino Steele, the 2006-2007 Pasadena City College Men’s Athlete of the Year, has accomplished his goal of qualifying to take part in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Steele, one of PCC’s greatest track and field sprinters, will race for his home country of Jamaica on its 4×400 meter relay team.

In 2007 for the PCC men’s track and field team, Steele soared to a school-record four gold medals at the California Community College State Track and Field Championships He was named Athlete of the Meet for his accomplishments after winning the 200 meters, 400 meters, and helping the Lancers capture the 4×100 and 4×400 relay state titles. Steele performed the same feat of four event wins at the Southern California Championships that year.

Steele, who attended Pacific High in New York and was a continuing member on the Jamaican junior national team before coming to Pasadena, set a PCC school record time in the 200 meters at 20.37 seconds. He topped the state charts in the 200 and 400 sprints for both his freshman (2006) and sophomore seasons.

In the 400, his 45.77 at the ’07 state meet remained his personal best until he broke that mark at 45.38 earlier this month at the Jamaican Olympic time trials.

The London Games’ 4×400 relay prelim race is scheduled for Aug. 9 at London’s Olympic Stadium. The finals are the next day.
