PCC Women’s Swim 4th is South Coast Conference Tops At Mt. SAC Invitational

Sophomore Liza Echeverria won the 200-yard breaststroke event and helped the Pasadena City College women’s swim team place fourth at the 17-team, Mt. San Antonio Invitational held Feb. 26-27.

The Lancers scored 266 points as they finished ahead of all other South Coast Conference teams including host Mt. SAC (237, fifth place), East Los Angeles (162, seventh), El Camino (153, eighth), Chaffey (101, 12th), Cerritos (77, 13th), Long Beach City (50, 14th), and LA Trade Tech (16, 16th).

Echeverria swam a time of 2 minutes, 38.36 seconds, the state’s current second fastest time, to win that event. She also took third in the 100 backstroke (1:06.05), and fourth in both the 200 individual medley (2:20.31) and 200 butterfly (2:24.10).

Sophomore Ariahn Givens placed second in the 50 freestyle (25.64) and third in the 100 free (55.54, fourth best in state). Sophomore Deborah McCandliss placed ninth in the 1,650 freestyle at 21:47.69. The PCC 400 free relay of McCandliss, Echeverria, sophomore Phoebe Lee and Givens grabbed fourth at 3:54.02

Orange Coast won the Mt. SAC Invitational.

MEN PLACE 8TH 

The Lancers men’s team took eighth out of 17 teams at the Mt. SAC Invitational. PCC scored 213 points while Mt. SAC won the team title.

Freshman David Jimenez swam fourth in the 100 backstroke (57.22) and fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:07.55). First-year swimmer Leo Nuntampramote was sixth in the 400 IM (4:45.57) while freshman Phillip Lee took eighth in the 100 butterfly (54.97). Sophomore Samuel Sanchez picked up seventh place finishes in the 500 freestyle (5:12.92) and the 100 backstroke (60.60).

The 200 medley relay of Jimenez, Nuntapramote, Lee and Sanchez took sixth at 1:45.30.

The PCC swim teams, coached by Terry Stoddard, will open their home schedule on Friday, Mar. 4 as they participate in a South Coast Conference-opening, double dual meet against East Los Angeles and Long Beach City Colleges. First event is 12:30 p.m. at the Aquatic Center.
