A Los Angeles area radio station owned by Stevie Wonder has mounted a campaign to raise funds to help the family of a 19-year-old killed on March 24 by Pasadena police after a false 911 report of an armed robbery pay for the funeral expenses.
KJLH, a division of Wonder’s Taxi Productions, is a major radio station for African-Americans and urban consumers in Southern California. The Los Angeles home for the Steve Harvey Morning Show, KJLH’s award-winning Front Page show with Dominique DiPrima is Los Angeles’ only talk radio show focused on African-American issues.
McDade’s funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at an Altadena church. The family said it needed to raise $10,000 for the burial.
On Tuesday Carson city Councilmember Mike Gipson led a rally in the South Bay city that more raised over $500.
The following day, Kenneth McDade, the father of Kendrec McDade, made an emotional plea for financial help on KJLH’s Front Page show resulting additional donations totaling over $1,500.
Donors came from all over Southern California to the Inglewood-based radio station to drop off donations. Stop the Violence, Increase the Peace Foundation founder Khalid Shaw walked in a check for$200 while McDade was still on air.
The family says a memorial fund has been started at Chase Bank in the name of Kendrec McDade to help pay for the burial, and provided the following information to those interested in making donations:
