A surge in the use of illegal fireworks — up from 223% so far this month compared to last June — has prompted Pasadena police to mount a specialized Fireworks Suppression Unit which was deployed earlier this week.
“During the past two months, we have seen firework calls more than double from previous years,” said Lt. William Grisafe.
He said the calls “are from neighbors who are fearful of not only the explosive sounds, but also the potential danger fireworks can cause.”
Thursday night in San Bernardino, police were called to mediate a neighborhood disturbance after a fire from illegal fireworks heavily damaged a residence. The homeowner reportedly threatened retaliation against neighbors who had set off the fireworks and had to be restrained by officers.
“The illegal use of fireworks poses significant dangers,” Grisafe observed.
Recent years have seen multiple fireworks-caused fires in Pasadena.
Police personnel assigned to the suppression unit will focus on patrolling for violations and responding quickly to calls for service related to illegal fireworks within Pasadena.
Grisafe said these officers are tasked with taking a “proactive approach” to identifying and taking enforcement action with those suspected of using, possessing or selling prohibited incendiary devices — including so-called “safe and sane” fireworks.
City code specifies fireworks are illegal, even on your own property.
The ordinance change allows for the prosecution of fireworks-related offenses and for the demand of payment for all costs associated with the safe disposal of confiscated fireworks. Violators are subject to arrest; having their vehicles impounded; and serving up to one year in jail and fines up to $50,000.
Officials said residents should call police at (626) 744-4241 to report illegal fireworks and other suspicious activities. Residents may also use the City’s smartphone app, available at www.cityofpasadena.net/csc to report illegal firework
