The Pasadena Police Department released the identity of a man shot and killed by police on Friday following a pursuit.
According to statement released Sunday, detectives so far have not located a residence for Lloyd Nelson Jr., 47 and still are investigating his ties to Pasadena, which also remain unknown at this time.
Meanwhile to ensure transparency, Pasadena Police Chief John Perez told Pasadena Now on Sunday that the investigation will be conducted by the Pasadena Police Department so that local stakeholders will continue to receive information on the incident.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) conducted investigations into officer involved shootings incidents over the past several years. However, the LASD would not allow local police to comment on those incidents, which made it harder for local stakeholders to get information.
Nelson was fatally shot at 3:35 p.m. on Friday at the conclusion of a vehicle pursuit at the intersection of Corson Street and Allen Avenue. A police officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg in that incident.
Detectives responded to the scene and immediately commenced an investigation, scouring the area for witnesses and evidence. Preliminarily, the investigation has revealed that the suspect shot at officers immediately at the conclusion of the vehicle pursuit, resulting in the exchange of gunfire and the suspect’s ultimate death, according to Sunday’s statement.
The release concludes by reminding local residents that
“violent encounters in our community will always have a significant impact on those involved and on those in the neighboring communities, as the loss of any life is difficult to understand. The Pasadena Police Department will continue to be transparent and provide details of the shooting as it is able to.”
