Police Oversight Could Return to Council on Monday

City Councilmembers could choose their oversight commissioners on Monday.

Last week Mayor Victor Gordo said that oversight would return to the City Council at the meeting following the Memorial Day break.

“My belief is that when the council wanted to have the full empanelling as well as the auditor hired at the same time,” Gordo said during public comment not on the agenda. “We have appointed an ad hoc committee to work with the City Attorney’s office to identify the independent police auditor that committee has continued its work andI believe has identified some candidates or a candidate for appointment.”

Gordo said due diligence was being conducted on that candidate.

“You can expect that matter will come forward shortly.”

“We will come forward with the eight and then when the IPA hire is complete then we will come forward with that process as well,” he said.

So far, three commissioners — Florence Annang, Juliana Serrano and Alexis Abernety — have been selected to represent local community based organizations.

At least five members of the 11-person board could be women,

In District 1, Councilmember Tyron Hampton said he selected Esprit Loren Jones, a Black woman, after Hampton interviewed applicants on Zoom on March 30.

Councilmember Felicia Williams has confirmed to Pasadena Now that she had submitted a Latina woman to the city as her choice. Williams would not reveal the name of her choice when asked by Pasadena Now.

District 3 Councilman John Kennedy’s selection announced in April that he has selected a Black man to sit on the commission. Kennedy made the announcement after former District 1 Councilmember Jacque Robinson-Baisley lamented during public comment that there appeared to be no Black or Latino men in the running.

Kennedy’s choice, along with Raul Ibanez, who was appointed by Councilmember Jessica Rivas, means six of the commissioners would be people of color and five of them could be women. If the council chooses McKenzie or Abernathy, a majority of the commission would be made up of Black and Latino residents.

So far no information has been released who councilmembers Gene Masuda, Steve Madison, Andy Wilson and Gordo plan to appoint.

  • Due to the fact that one (1) African American male will be put upon to represent all Brothers we need at least two (2) to expand the African American male perspective….
