Pasadena City College Professor Hugo Schwyzer announced in his blog Wednesday that he will leave indefinitely his two-decade-old teaching career.
“I am on medical leave for the entire fall semester, and in early 2014, will transition into disability retirement status,” Hugo said in his blog. “I do not anticipate returning to the classroom at PCC, or anywhere else for that matter.”
Schwyzer said he is struggling with a mental illness and has been hospitalized five times this summer.
“This is a desperately difficult time for me and my family, and in the view of my psychiatrist, it is a time for me to take disability retirement. (A disability retirement is processed through the State Teachers Retirement System, not the college,)” the professor said.
Pasadena City College had not been informed of the professr’s decision to leave, PCC legal counsel Gail Cooper told the Pasadena Star-News.
Schwyzer admitted in his blog in early September that he was having sexual relationships with his students.
The College officials immediately released a statement afterwards stating Schwyzer may face termination for violating the school’s policy. PCCâs Policy No. 62 or also called as âConflicts of Interest Arising from Consensual Relationshipsâ states that sexual relationship should not exist between faculty and students.
Schwyzer also made news for attempted suicide and alleged extramarital affairs. He became well-known when reports were published about his Humanities 3 class in PCC called âNavigating Pornography.â Resulting public outrage and pressure from PCC officials ultimately caused him to cancel the class, Schwyzer had claimed.
