on Sunday.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Paige, the couple called law enforcement officials Sunday night via cell phone to request assistance near the canyon’s second waterfall, kicking off a search that began around 8 p.m.

According to a Tweet from Page, “We can see the hikers,on cliff, approx. 1000′ above canyon. Altadena rescue crew will try and reach them tonight.”

Authorities are working on sending more ground crews to save the hikers because attempts to reach them by air were thwarted by rainy weather, Paige said.

“Crews were working until about 1 a.m. trying to get into their location, it was just too rugged, they’re totally off any trails,” Paige said. “Last contact was about 9:30 last night. Tried the helicopter last night before the rain, they weren’t able to get in.”

“We just tried flying in right now and they couldn’t get in due to the rain,” he continued.

Currently, Sheriff’s Air 5 is waiting for a break in the rainy weather so it can be piloted into Altadena to save the hikers, according to a tweet by the Altadena Sheriff’s Station sent this morning around 7:20 a.m.

Earlier tweets confirmed visual sighting of the hikers, who are on a cliff 1,000 feet above Eaton Canyon and uninjured. Though ground rescue teams tried to reach them last night by going up with rain gear, hiking in the dark was considered too dangerous.

“Crews are getting rained on now. Hikers are not injured, but too dangerous to hike out in dark. We will stay on mountain till they are out,” read a Tweet sent around 11:30 p.m. last night by the Altadena Sheriff’s Station.

According to Paige, the last contact authorities had with the hikers was last night around 9:30 p.m.
