RBAC’s New Chief Development Officer Aims to Amplify Impact Through Community Engagement

The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center (RBAC) a nonprofit organization in the heart of Pasadena has long been more than just a physical structure; it’s a haven of inspiration, wellness, and transformation for its patrons. Now, with the recent appointment of Maya Barrera as Chief Development and Communications Officer, the RBAC is gearing up for a new era of growth and community service.

Maya Barrera is on a mission to ensure the RBAC’s legacy continues to thrive, and she firmly believes in the power of storytelling to accomplish this goal. “I want people to join us in a larger movement that will also ensure the RBAC continues to be a vibrant and integral part of our community for generations to come,” Barrera said. “With that said, my goal is to create opportunities within the “Let’s Pool Together” annual campaign specifically to meet the community and highlight the impact of our offerings in action.”

To achieve this, Barrera is engaging with the community to understand their motivations, challenges, and aspirations. She believes that the more an organization listens and identifies the community’s needs, the more responsive it can be.

The RBAC’s “Let’s Pool Together” campaign kicked off with a Community Coffee event on September 8, and this Friday, October 13, they will host “AquaSplash & Open House”. This event invites the community to partake in All-Star Water Fitness classes, meet the coaches and instructors, ask questions about RBAC programs, and enjoy various activities in and out of the pool. “It’s an afternoon where we’re opening our doors to the community, we invite everyone to come on in and join us for a celebration of all things aquatics,” she said.

Barrera’s passion for storytelling drives her work at RBAC. She believes that compelling stories can evoke emotions and create a powerful connection with the audience, motivating action and support. “Story can be the nudge you need to be reminded of the impact and legacy of your generosity,” Barrera emphasized.

As part of their “Let’s Pool Together” campaign, the RBAC will share stories about patrons who use the facility. These are stories like the swimmer who stays for hours, the dedicated athletes, the mermaids (a.k.a a group of water fitness regulars), and the parent witnessing the impact of water safety skills.

Barrera envisions a future where RBAC not only maintains its facility but also secures foundation, corporate, and government grants to support community development, mental health initiatives, athletic sports, and water safety education. She plans to reach out to local, county, and national funders who align with RBAC’s vision and mission.

Prior to joining RBAC, Barrera served in leadership roles at organizations such as The Harmony Project, Women Against Gun Violence (WAGV), and the South Central Los Angeles Ministry Project (LAMP). She brings a wealth of experience to her new position, complemented by her background as a musician and educator. Her appointment as Chief Development and Communications Officer at RBAC marks an exciting chapter in the center’s history. Through community engagement and the power of storytelling, she aims to ensure RBAC’s continued growth and positive impact on the community for years to come.
