The City of Pasadena will be closing the Robinson Park Recreation Center and relocating all the programming to continue at other facilities starting on January 9, 2017, as long-awaited work begins on a rehabilitation project that will see the reconstruction of the 9,000 square foot multipurpose room, its administrative offices, kitchen, open courtyard, and conference room; and the addition of fitness and dance rooms and structural upgrade of its 7,300 square foot gymnasium by the spring of 2018.

The project is the second phase of the Robinson Park Master Plan adopted by the City Council in 2002.

Phase I, constructed from 2008 to 2010, expanded the park by 2.5 acres, added off-street parking, new restrooms, storage facilities and amenities. It also included the installation of Pasadena’s first synthetic turf sports field and additional sport field lighting.

Phase I involved some $5 million, while Phase II will cost an estimated $11.4 million.

Horace Wormely, Director of Human Services and Recreation, said the design will make Robinson Park and its recreation center fully accessible and will include energy efficient lighting, technology and security upgrades, and drought-resistant landscaping.

Planning for the project involved an extensive community engagement which included over 30 community and Committee meetings and community events to gather public input on the design.

While construction is ongoing, Robinson Park staff will be temporarily housed at the Jackie Robinson Community Center at 1020 Fair Oaks Avenue through March 2018.

All programming scheduled previously at Robinson Park will be continued at other locations in the City, according to a city memo. Program participants will also be notified of new and ongoing recreation, youth sports, and Spring, Summer and Winter camp opportunities through the Human Services and Recreation Department’s seasonal brochures, newsletters and the department website.

All staff will retain existing telephone numbers and email addresses, and Robinson Park’s main line, (626) 744-7330, will be transferred to the Jackie Robinson Community Center.
