A school board candidate announced on Wednesday night that she is dropping out of the race.

“I am withdrawing my candidacy for the position of member of the PU?D Board of Education District [1] due to personal reasons,” wrote Rita Miller.

Pasadena Now sent an email requesting confirmation to the address Miller filed with the City Clerk’s office.

“Yes. I am withdrawing from the race for PUSD School Board District [1],” Miller said.

According to City Clerk Mark Jomsky, Miller’s name will still appear on the ballot.

Following the close of the nomination period, the ballot is set.  Los Angeles County has already started printing the millions of ballots that residents will use to make their voices heard.

Officially, California Elections Code Section 10224 states, “All nomination papers shall be filed with the city elections official during regular business hours as posted, not later than the 88th day before the election. Until that time, but not after, a candidate may withdraw his or her nomination paper after it is filed with the elections official as provided in this section.”

Miller qualified for the election in District 1 along with Billy Malone and Incumbent Kim Kenne.

Miller works as a public school teacher. She challenged Kenne for the seat once before in 2017 and received 37% of the vote in that race.

The elections will be decided by a plurality vote. The candidates with the most votes will win the seat. There are no run off contests. More than 50% of the vote is not required to win the election.
