Sabrina Martinez (from Blair High in Pasadena) launches a 3-pointer as part of her season-high 12 points in PCC’s 97-48 home win over ECC Compton Wednesday night, image by Richard Quinton.Six different Lancers either reached or surpassed their 2011-2012 season highs in points resulting in a team high for points this season as Pasadena City College routed winless El Camino College-Compton Center, 97-48, Wednesday in a South Coast Conference game at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
PCC evened both its overall record (9-9) and SCC mark, now at 3-3. Compton is 0-11 and 0-5 in conference action.
The Lancers opened the game with a 19-2 run v. the short-handed Tartars, who had only six players available. By the time Ashlee Cornelious made an offensive rebound and basket, PCC led by 30 points, 43-13, with 2:50 left in the first half. Pasadena would hit a big lead of 51 points, 93-42, with two minutes left in the contest.
Sophomore guard Vera Machado played a perfect first half, scoring 15 of her game-high and season best 17 points. In the first 20 minutes, Machado was 5-for-5 from the field, 2-for-2 on 3-pointers, and 3-for-3 at the free throw line. She finished 6-for-7 from the floor and added seven rebounds.
Sophomore forward Destinee Sellers matched her scoring high with 16 points along with eight rebounds. Getting significant time off the bench, reserve frosh forward Sabrina Martinez tallied 12 points, making 4-for-6 from 3-point land, plus dishing out a team-high five assists. Reserve sophomore guard Erica Steward joined the season-high club by scoring 11 points while sophomore guard Kim Wong (11 points, three 3-pointers) and the freshman forward Cornelious (10 points, seven rebounds, 5-for-7 from the field) each matched their top scoring individual game this season.
Eleven of the 12 Lancers scored, including starting sophomore center Tonisha Lacey, who had five points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. PCC far exceeded its team average shooting percentage, making 38 of 81 shots from the field for a .469 mark.
For Compton, Evelyn Sanchez scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Waynnesha Surles scored 14 points.
Pasadena, not ranked in the State Top 20 Poll, will have its hands full Friday when it travels to face No. 6-ranked East Los Angeles College in 5 p.m. conference tilt.
Stokes Approaches 500-Point Club
Marquetta Stokes, who scored five points in limited minutes v. Compton, is 14 points shy of the Lancers’ 500-point club for a career. Stokes, now with 486 points, will eventually become the 26th member of the elite PCC scorers. Dominique Scott, now at USC, and Anna Shahinian each entered the club last season. First-year assistant coach Kinyada Johnson is the Lancers’ all-time leading scorer with 1,097 points when she played at PCC from 2007-2009.
