In honor of National Older Americans Month, Metro’s On the Move Riders Program is hosting its 8th Annual Older Adult Transportation Expo at the Pasadena Convention Center on Tuesday, May 7, offering seniors a comprehensive toolkit for navigating public transportation and fostering community bonds.

The expo, a cornerstone of Metro’s commitment to empowering older adults with transit knowledge and resources, will feature a lineup of tailored travel training workshops, motivational speakers, and a transportation exhibitor hall. All of these features are aimed at equipping seniors with the tools necessary to confidently utilize public transportation.

“Whether you’re looking for tips on using public transportation, exploring alternative transportation options, or simply want to connect with others in your community, this event is perfect for you,” Metro said in a statement. “Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to learn and engage with experts in the field.”

The event will kick off with welcome remarks from Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins at 9:45 a.m., followed by a keynote address from actor and transit advocate Beth Broderick at 12:10 p.m. With an estimated 700 seniors expected to attend, the expo promises to be a vital platform for seniors to engage with transit experts and fellow community members.

At the heart of Metro’s On the Move Riders Program are its dedicated Travel Buddies, trained volunteers passionate about facilitating transit education for older adults.

“Through more than 30 travel clubs, Metro’s 50 travel buddies organize trips and show older adults how to obtain and use a Senior Reduced Fare TAP card, plan a trip, understand maps and signage, and navigate the Metro system and other local transit, all to help them become confident transit riders,” the organizers said.

With more than 2 million older adults in L.A. County and projections indicating a significant demographic shift by 2030, initiatives like the Older Adult Transportation Expo are essential for ensuring seniors can access vital services and maintain social connections.
