Pasadena area residents will get a chance to drive electric cars during an Electric Car Guest Drive hosted by Pasadena Water and Power, and the water and power departments at Burbank and Glendale, on Saturday, April 8, at Rose Bowl Parking Lot I by Brookside Park.

The ride-and-drive event will feature electric cars manufactured by Chevrolet, Tesla, BMW, Ford, VW, Audi, Fiat Chrysler, Hyundai, Mercedes and other car makers.

To be able to drive these electric cars, people only have to register beforehand to receive an invitation and confirm drive time availability.

Partnering with the water and power utilities in hosting the event is EV Quorum, a group of San Diego-based software developers who have been setting up online conferencing systems, corporate websites and e-business systems. Many of its members are also electric car enthusiasts who see a lack of information about electric cars and zero-emission modes of transport among most online resources.

“The majority of people don’t know very much about electric cars so we want to give them an opportunity to learn about the benefits of electric cars which are generally zero tailpipe emission, they use domestically produced fuel, they don’t use foreign oil, and that electric cars are cheaper than gas cars in some cases to purchase and then almost all cases to operate,” EV Quorum’s Christopher Alan said.”

Alan said the guest drive will also change the mistaken impression among many that electric cars don’t compare with regular gas-powered vehicles in terms of speed and acceleration.

“The fastest production car made is a Tesla P100D all-electric car. That is the fastest production car you can buy today,” Alan said. “The interest in electric cars is just exploding. Between 2010 and 2016, about 500,000 electric vehicles were sold in the United States. In just about a one- or two-week period, over 400,000 put deposits down on the new Tesla Model 3.”

Other previous Electric Car Guest Drive events have been held in 12 cities from San Diego to the San Francisco Bay Area, featuring the Tesla Model S, Fiat 500e, the Ford Focus Electric, Honda Fit EV, Toyota RAV4 EV, and Chevrolet’s Volt and Spark.

Static displays of the newer electric car models will be available at the Rose Bowl during the event. Displays and educational demonstrations of the most popular EV charging stations will also be available for hands-on viewing.

Representatives from the car manufacturers will be on hand to discuss methods of fueling EVs using domestic and renewable sources of energy.

Registered guests will receive a copy of the Electric Car Insider EV Buyers Guide, a 64-page four-color print magazine about electric vehicles.
