Using patience at the plate, the Pasadena City College softball team drew a season-high 13 walks Tuesday and snapped a 6-game, South Coast Conference losing streak with an 11-3 victory over visiting El Camino College-Compton Center. The game, played at Robinson Park, ended in the bottom of the sixth due to the 8-run mercy rule.
Pasadena improved to 8-15 overall and 3-6 in the SCC. Compton dropped to 4-12 and remains winless in conference at 0-9.
Kayla Moore, hitting as the designated player, batted 3-for-4 with three RBI as she raised her team-leading batting average to .481. Centerfielder Brittany Skoien drew three walks, scored four runs, and hit a bomb, RBI double to center in the fifth inning. First baseman Natalie Ficocelli also was walked three times and hit a double while catcher Cecilia Chavez was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.
Reserve outfielder Viviana Ordaz added a 1-for-2 performance with a walk and two runs scored. Starting third baseman Alyssa Gonzalez drew a pair of walks and had two RBI.
“We had to force ourselves to be patient at the plate,” said PCC Head Coach Brittany Williams. “Compton is better than it was last year, and tied us, 3-3, early in the game. One problem we’ve had this season is our hitters chasing bad pitches. The walks created runs. We have to take advantage of opportunities given to us.”
In the pitching circle, Casey Ramirez allowed just two hits, two earned runs and struck out four in four innings of work, gaining her third win. Reliever Bronwyn Stewart recorded the save with two innings of 1-hit, shutout ball.
