Mark Kim, co-owner of the Hill Street Café in La Canada voted yes on Measure LC, a $150 per parcel tax that if approved would bring in an estimated $4.5 million over its five-year duration to benefit La Canada public schools. In addition, the restaurant created La Canada School days, a community outreach program, designed to support local schools by donating 3% of its daily net proceeds to La Canada schools Monday – Thursday.

“We wish every local business would join us in providing financial support for our schools,” Mark Kim, co-owner of the Hill Street Café said.  “Our restaurant recently began donating 3% of its net sales, every Monday through Thursday, to La Cañada’s three elementary schools and the high school. We expect to donate approximately $35,000 to our schools this year. Business owners often don’t have time to volunteer for our schools, but we can and should give our financial support, whether large or small.”

The estimated cuts to the district will be approximately $3.5 million over the next five years, this will cause an increase to the student-to-teacher ratio and some current programs may be cut. The parcel tax is expected to bring in about $900,000 a year to cover the shortfall by about 25% with the new cuts the percentage is closer to 20%.

If Measure LC is approved, the funds will go directly to maintain programs in the district. It will not create more programs but will help to keep the programs that are already in place functioning.

From now until August 31st, the Hill Street Café will be donating 3% of its net proceeds from any sale to local schools. The following schools can be supported as listed below:

Mondays: Paradise Canyon

Tuesdays: La Canada High School

Wednesdays: Palm Crest Elementary

Thursdays: La Canada Elementary

The money will be put to good use and will support PTA programs that support classrooms, school supplies, enrichment activities, as well as instructional aid. In addition, Palm Crest will use the money to help purchase backstage curtains for the stage in the school’s new multi-purpose room. La Canada High School is going to continue to use the money to support their football team.
