PCC’s Women’s Badminton Team Spins 2 Shutouts This Week

The Pasadena City College women’s badminton team stretched its South Coast Conference winning streak to 17 under head coach Jennifer Ho as the Lancers scored their second straight shutout, 21-0 at El Camino College-Compton Center Friday. PCC blanked El Camino, 21-0, on Wednesday at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

In the El Camino win, sophomore Eugenia Mendez stepped into the No. 2 singles role and won 21-4, 21-5 and 21-12, 21-11 against the Warriors’ top two players. She teamed with letterman Sandra Maw for No. 1 doubles wins of 21-6, 21-8 over Shadira Woodland and Oann Lee, and 21-6, 21-8 over Caitlin Villalobos and Watsuki Hoshiko, 21-9, 21-4.

Maw (at No. 1), Ana Espinoza, Jennifer Delgado, Diana Resendiz, and Hong Yan Liu each recorded two singles match wins. Rebecca Tzou and Daniela Raygoza won two in No. 2 doubles while Espinoza and Liu won its lone No. 3 doubles match.

ECC’s closest chance at winning a point was at No. 5 singles but Resendiz recovered from 1-0 deficit to win 13-21, 21-12, 21-18.

Against Compton, Ho continued to have fun with the ladder as Espinoza played No. 1 and won two singles. Delgado played at No. 2 and picked up a pair of wins as did Raygoza, Liu, Mendez (No. 5) and Tzou, who played at No. 6. All of the Lancers wins were straight sets including two doubles wins each for the duo of Espinoza-Liu and Delgado-Raygoza. Mendez-Tzou won in No. 3 doubles.

PCC (6-0 overall, 5-0 in SCC play) has surrended just 11 team points against in six matches. The Lancers host NorCal foe De Anza on Wednesday, Mar. 30 in a 3 p.m. non-conference match at the HP Gym.
