Tina Wu Fredericks, incumbent Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Board Trustee for Area 6, officially kicked off her re-election campaign on Sunday, March 24.

Her campaign reported a gathering of supporters and endorsers, including Congresswoman Judy Chu, Senator Anthony Portantino, Pasadena Councilmember Jess Rivas, Alhambra Vice Mayor Sasha Renée Pérez, and a representative from the United Teachers of Pasadena.

Her campaign portrayed the kickoff event as drawing attention to Fredericks’ dedication to strengthening public education and her track record of advocacy for teachers, students, and parents within the district.

“As the only Board member with K-12 teaching experience, Tina Wu Fredericks knows how to best support students in the classroom,”  Congresswoman Judy Chu said at the event, according to the campaign.

Senator Anthony Portantino said: “We need to re-elect strong and experienced leaders like Tina to strengthen and expand investment in the public education system.”

Councilmember Rivas, who is said to be the first to have encouraged Fredericks to enter public office, said what she admires most about the trustee is that “she’s not afraid to stand up for what’s right even if she’s the lone voice.”

Fredericks was elected to the PUSD Board of Education in 2020. During her term, she led initiatives to expand educational opportunities, ensure student safety, and promote accessibility in school board meetings.

Her campaign reported that Fredericks has also earned the endorsement of the United Teachers of Pasadena, which represents 800 educators within PUSD. Jonathan Gardner, President of the United Teachers of Pasadena, cited Fredericks’ support for teachers, community reputation, and dedication to student success as key factors in their decision to endorse her for a second term.

Fredericks said the endorsements from PUSD teachers humble her and will honor their trust by continuing to fight for investment in the classroom so students get the resources they need for success in college and careers.

Fredericks’ campaign said they have been able to raise over $10,000 in donations for her campaign within a month of launching.

Fredericks is a mother of two daughters, one daughter is currently an eighth-grader at PUSD Octavia E. Butler Magnet and the other now in the California State University, Los Angeles Early Entrance Program. She has served on PTA Boards for multiple terms as an active parent volunteer.

Fredericks taught high school math at Burbank High School and Northern California public middle and high schools. A former employee of PUSD, she was a third-grade teaching assistant at Willard International Baccalaureate Elementary School and a summer school LEARNs teacher at San Rafael Elementary School. She hopes to utilize her background to strengthen public education. She has lived with her husband and daughters in Pasadena since 2010.
