Police arrested a homeless man Thursday after he tried to set a building on fire at the Jackie Robinson Community Center in Pasadena after being denied use of the facility’s showers, authorities said.
The incident unfolded about 1 p.m. at the community center, 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., according to Pasadena police Lt. Anthony Burgess.
After being denied access to the showers, the man became enraged, the lieutenant said. “He got out his lighter and tried to light a detached bungalow on fire.”
Staff immediately called police, who responded and took the man into custody without a struggle.
Scorch marks were found on the building, but it failed to ignite, Burgess said.
The suspect, described as a local transient in his late-30s, was booked on suspicion of arson, he said. The man’s identity was withheld as detectives continued their investigation Friday morning.
