Two court hearings are scheduled for today at the Pasadena Courthouse in significant local cases involving murder and manslaughter charges.

At 8:30 a.m., a hearing is set for Guary Lonnie Shuford III, 32, of Los Angeles, who is charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the shooting death of Jamila Elysse Moss, 34, at her apartment complex at Del Mar Boulevard and S. Raymond Avenue in Pasadena on August 21, 2023.

Shuford, who was reportedly on parole after serving a 13-year prison sentence for a 2010 robbery conviction and out on bail for a separate charge of possessing a firearm by a felon, allegedly barricaded himself inside the victim’s apartment after the shooting, leading to a several-hour standoff with SWAT teams from Pasadena and Glendale police departments and crisis negotiators before surrendering.

He was being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles with bail set at $2 million.

Also at 8:30 a.m., a preliminary hearing date will be set for Jeffrey Butler, 30, of Altadena, who is charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run resulting in death in connection with an October 18, 2023 crash at the intersection of North Raymond Avenue and East Penn Street in Pasadena that killed Antonio Mendoza-Hernandez, 63, of Pasadena, and Veralice Yanira Membreno Orellana, 33, of Pasadena.

According to police, the incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. when a speeding white Lincoln Navigator collided with the victims’ Nissan sedan and a parked vehicle.

Butler and his passenger allegedly fled from the scene on foot but were arrested outside Butler’s home two days later by the Pasadena Police Dept.’s Robbery Homicide Unit and Street Crime Unit. He was also booked on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death and may have been in violation of parole at the time of his arrest.

Both hearings will take place in the Pasadena Courthouse, located at 300 E. Walnut St.
