Police sought two suspects who used a truck and chains to try to rip an ATM from a wall at a Pasadena bank branch early Wednesday, but ran away empty-handed after the truck became stuck, officials said.

A witness called police just after 4:20 a.m. to report seeing two people, described only as male and wearing hooded sweatshirts, attempting to steal the cash machine at Bank of America, 3555 E. Foothill Blvd., Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema said.

The would-be thieves caused significant damage to the ATM, but it did not appear they managed to break into it, he said.

“The truck got stuck on the island, and they abandoned it,” the lieutenant said. They were last seen running into the surrounding neighborhood.

Police were looking into the ownership of the truck as they continued gathering clues and seeking surveillance video.
