A security guard was assaulted and his phone stolen in an unprovoked attack while he was on patrol in the 1200 block of North Lake Avenue on Thursday, police said.

Lieutenant Matt Campeau of the Pasadena Police Department said the victim, a 31-year-old Hispanic man from Los Angeles, reported about 10:45 a.m. being punched by a seemingly intoxicated suspect.

Campeau said the security guard defended himself, and the altercation turned into a physical fight on the ground.

During the struggle, the suspect’s friend intervened and separated them. The suspect then took advantage of the situation, grabbing the security guard’s phone which had fallen out of the victim’s pocket during the Struggle, before fleeing the scene in a white 2019 Honda Civic, Campeau said.

The security guard reportedly complained of pain to his face, hands, and knees.

The value of the stolen phone is unknown.

Detectives are currently investigating the incident and have not released any description of the suspect, other than his being a Black man in his thirties.
