The USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena canceled its Lunar New Year Festival Sunday due to the Monterey Park mass shooting.
“In light of the devastating news of the deadly mass shooting in neighboring Monterey Park, the USC Pacific Asia Museum is canceling its Lunar New Year Festival that was scheduled for today,” officials said in a mid-morning statement.
“As the only Asian and Pacific Islander art and culture museum in Southern California, USC PAM is a haven for the AAPI community. USC PAM and the USC community mourns with Los Angeles County, and we are canceling the event out of respect for the victims and an abundance of caution.”
The statement said museum officials are in mourning.
“All of us at USC PAM are heartbroken to hear about the horrific violence that happened in our home in the San Gabriel Valley,” said Dr. Bethany Montagano, USC Pacific Asia Museum Director, “Our hearts mourn with the victims’ families and our community members at this time.”
Ten people were killed and at least 10 others were wounded in the mass shooting, which occurred at a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park.
The shooter later committed suicide during a confrontation with law enforcement, authorities said Sunday. No motive for the killing spree has been determined.
The attack occurred at 10:22 p.m. Saturday at the Star Dance Studio in the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue, Homicide Bureau Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told reporters at the scene during an early morning news conference.
Ten people were pronounced dead at the scene and the 10 injured were listed in stable to critical condition at area hospitals including Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, Meyer said.
