Veterans of America’s Armed Forces will receive a special tribute Saturday, May 25, when La Cañada Presbyterian Church presents its “Americana” concert at 8 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

When the LCPC Chancel Choir and Orchestra perform the “Armed Forces Salute,” each of the five service songs will be played in succession, and veterans will be invited to stand when the song for their branch of the military is played. The audience typically responds with grateful applause. “This is our opportunity to recognize those who have died defending our freedom and liberty, as well as veterans and active-duty members of the military,” said Jack Lantz, LCPC’s Director of Worship Arts. (Lantz, a former Army captain, will already be on his feet for the medley of service songs, as he conducts the orchestra and choir.)

Other songs of tribute will include “Hymn to the Fallen,” the John Williams work from the movie “Saving Private Ryan”; Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” written in 1942 to honor the soldiers of World War II; Charles Ives’ “They Are There!” from the World War I era; and such traditional favorites as “America the Beautiful,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and “Semper Fidelis.”

All veterans in uniform will be admitted free to the concert.

Tickets are $15 ($20 reserved) and may be purchased in advance at the church office 626 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada or by calling (818) 790-6708, or at the door. For further information, visit lacanadapc.org.

About La Cañada Presbyterian Church

La Cañada Presbyterian Church (LCPC) began in 1948 with 158 members and a vision to reach the world for Jesus Christ. That early church was built quite literally on faith and charity from remainder brick and an operating budget that turned just about all of its revenue into active ministry. Through 65 years of outreach, LCPC grew to 2,000 active attendees doing ministry throughout Southern California and in 40 countries around the world. In 2010 the church completed a campus expansion which doubled its physical base for ministry and kept its historical sanctuary as the heart of the new grounds.
