Wiggling and Waggling to Help Furry Friends

Annual Humane Society Rose Bowl pet event on course to be one of the most successful ever, says spokesperson

It seemed like every Buddy and every Missy was out for a stroll early Sunday morning at Brookside Park for the 26th annual Wiggle Waggle Walk for the Animals, sponsored by the Pasadena Humane Society.

Close to 800 pets and their people circled the Rose Bowl in one of two courses—a full 3.3-mile loop or a shorter mile circle. In addition, more than 70 vendors brought out their best pet products, from chewy toys to dog ice cream (Yes, that’s a thing).

“This is our largest fundraiser of the year,” said Kevin McManus, Humane Society spokesperson, “to help us do all of the programming that we do throughout the course of the year.”

McManus pointed out that the event had already hit its fundraising goal of $250,000 earlier in the week before any pet and parent took their first steps.

“As of this morning, we were just over $300,000,” he said proudly. It’s just an amazing amount of money that will help us with our wildlife program, our foster care program, our humane education, and our adoptions. Everything that we do at the shelter will fund all of that.”

According to McManus, this year’s event is nudging close to the most successful fundraising event they’ve ever held.

Gigi Gonzales, of South Pasadena, was taking her Boston Terrier, Simon, out for their regular Sunday stroll around the stadium, when she encountered the hundreds of dogs and owners scurrying her way from the starting line at Brookside.

“I was so surprised,” she laughed, “but, hey, the more the merrier.”

McManus, who has participated in a number of Wiggle Waggle Walks over the years, also noted that his favorite part of the event is when animals who have been adopted, either at the walk, or at the shelter, return with their owners to participate in the annual event.

“It’s really like a family reunion, of sorts,” he said. “To see these families again year after year, it really just brings tears to my eyes.”

McManus also noted that donations to the Wiggle Waggle event can still be made by clicking  here.
