Women’s Basketball Settles for 2nd at Glendale Tourney

The Pasadena City College women’s basketball team kept it close but Fullerton College made key shots in the final few minutes to win the Glendale College Vaquero Shootout tournament title, 61-55, Sunday. The Lancers (4-2) took second place after winning the tourney last year.

The undefeated Hornets (5-0) took the lead for good, 52-49, on a 3-point bomb by tourney MVP Kelli Calton with 3:40 left. Fullerton made 6-of-6 free throw attempts over the last 79 seconds to seal the win.

The Lancers took their last lead, 41-40, on a layup by center Chanelle Fisher with 9:25 remaining. The game featured nine ties and neither team had more than a 4-point lead until the final minute.

PCC forward and All-Glendale Tournament selection Regerina Baker scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Another strong performance was turned in by point guard Judith Espinoza on 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals. Off the bench, forward Tiyana Watkins added three points and six rebounds.

Shooting guard Kyrstin Nakamura, who had made three 3-pointers in each of PCC’s first four games, made only one (in eight attempts) v. Fullerton.

“We were playing without two injured starters, so we did well under the circumstances,” said PCC head coach Joe Peron. “Both Espinoza and Baker played tremendously well to get us as far as we did here. We’re getting good defense from Chy’annea Hodges, who we are trying to get more involved offensively. We’re improving steadily.”

The Lancers next host Pierce College Tuesday, Nov. 25 in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
