The Pasadena City College women’s soccer team snapped a 17-match road winless streak (0-12-5) for the program with a 3-0 win at San Diego City Friday. The Lancers improved to 1-2 this season.

PCC last won away from home back on Oct. 1, 2013 in a 3-0 victory at El Camino College (Torrance). The streak likely would have ended last year but the Lancers’ scheduled match at last-place El Camino-Compton Center was moved to PCC late in the season due to field issues in Compton. That October 24 game proved to be the last win by the Lancers last year as the program broke an 8-game winless string overall (0-7-1).

Pasadena opened the scoring just six minutes into the game v. SDCC when frosh midfielder Juliana Gurule split the Knights’ defense with a pass that led to a breakaway goal by forward Alexis Acosta (Temple City HS). Gurule, from Maranatha High, then scored in the 28th minute assists by sophomore midfielder Rachel Schroeder and rookie defender Jasmin Rodriguez.

The Lancers completed the scoring in the 32nd minute when frosh defender Kelly Youssef (Monrovia High) rocketed a 20-yard blast into the side corner of the net. PCC dominated throughout the match, outshooting San Diego, 20-5. Starting freshman goalie Monica Rogers only had to make two saves and reserve first-year goalie Natalie Martin played the final four minutes as the pair combined for the shutout.

“We really got into a rhythm early and then played hard for each other for the entire 90 minutes,” said PCC head coach Reggie Rivas. “I think it was a big confidence boost for our team. We have talented kids, but we went up against a couple of tough teams to open the season.”

The Lancers will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 18 when they make a trip to Mt. San Jacinto for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
